BTW, I have to agree with Englishman - the sight of 'local yokels' miming away to that cheesy Waltonesque dialogue always raised a titter this side of the water - the WT (and the people responsible for the original 'performances') obviously have NO self-awareness whatsoever

My Favourite Assembly Drama
by Englishman inall the more hilarious as the actors were known to me.
seeing some dub london cockney you've known for years miming to an american accented voice had me holding my sides in mirth!
..until, that is, the subject matter begun to surface.

My personal fave dates back to the mid/late 80s and hinged on a US/UK language-divide gag, in which a worldly high-school girl (in shocking pink tights, I recall) attempted to seduce a JW classmate, who hightailed it home and related the whole episode to his mother, with words to the effect that "a worldly girl at school got me into an empty classroom (like she had a gun at his head, LOL) and tried to get me to commit fornication with her!!"
At which point the anguished mother cried "OH, RANDY!!" (the boy's name)
Now, for any North Americans who may be in the dark:
randy (UK) = horny (US)
As you can imagine, at that a ripple of snorting and choking rippled around the stadium I was at, along with, I imagine, every other convention venue in the UK. I'd love to have been at a big international (like Twickenham) just to see the puzzled looks of any visiting American dubs as the suppressed hysteria erupted around them.
The GB obviously never did their linguistic/cultural homework for that one

Time To Forgive The Prince Of Wales?
by Englishman ingeorge carey, ex-archbishop of canterbury, ex-number 1 head honcho of the church of england next to her maj. .
>>>>it would be "the natural thing" for the prince of wales and camilla parker bowles to marry, the former archbishop of canterbury has said.. george carey and his wife, eileen, met camilla at their son andrew's house in peckham, south-east london, after her relationship with the prince went public, he told the times.. lord carey said of charles and camilla: "he is the heir to the throne and he loves her.
the natural thing is that they should get married.".

IMO, if he should have to ask forgiveness for anything, it should be for not being honest with himself, for not having the spine to stand up to his family (particularly Philip), and for marrying a woman (a girl, really) that he clearly wasn't in love with (remember his infamous "love...whatever that means" comment?). If he had, Di would've married a minor aristo and would likely be alive and well today.
Just one of a number of reasons why (bearing the tragic case of Margaret in mind) the only royal I have any time for is Edward VIII. To stand up as an individual against the might of the establishment and fight for your own personal happiness takes MAJOR coconuts, if you ask me...

The Joy Of Sex..
by Englishman in..is notably absent amongst middle-aged dubs.. maybe the joy of sex was forbidden to them?.
take a peek at the nov 1964 wt study: >>the male sex organs and the female sex organs were to cooperate in fulfilling this god-given command.
thus the sex organs are not playthings to have a lot of fun with, for such fun does not serve the divine purpose.

IMO, I'd say the joy of sex was pretty much absent among JWs, period.
'The Life-long Neurosis of Sex' might be nearer the mark

"Women Who Love Too Much And The Money They Charge"

(linguistic note: 'trousers' (UK) = 'pants' (US))
Made me laugh, anyway...

Your favourite cars / motors?
by Celtic inwhat is your favourite car / motor?
who makes the best sports cars?
(obviously discounting the american models which just look like shite and drive like a pregnant sow).
-
Cardinal Fang
Contemporary car - would have to be the Brabus Merc EV12 - fastest roadgoing saloon (205 mph) - 50 grand *might* get me one second-hand and enough fuel to get to Germany
Classic - Mercedes again - the 300 SL Gullwing - arguably the most beautiful car ever built - not sure if 50K'd buy me one in concourse condition... this from a man who drives a Renault with nearly 120K on the clock

Which men / lads here cry when listening to music / watching films?
by Celtic inyou know how some of us guys have to put on a bit of an act sometimes, we have to set our faces into our coping scowl, but underneath, we're too well aware of just how soft we are?
well.. what music to the big guys here only, not you wimpy bunch, brings a tear to your eye or which films is it that you need to keep a box of tissues handy by you to wipe away the dampness in your eye?.
for celtic it's a track by dido - white flag and also black eyed peas - where is the love?

I always end up coming late to the few threads I feel I can contribute something meaningful to , but here goes anyway...
Films - none that I can think of.... but music...
Most recent - "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen (various covers, esp. Jeff Buckley)
"Ae Fond Kiss" - Robert Burns, sung by Isobel Buchan on the film "The Long Day Closes" - some notes sound like someone bowing a saw...
"The Long Day Closes" - composer unknown - from the same film - male voice choir
"We Have All The Time In The World" - Louis Armstrong
"Going Home" and "An Ubhal As Airde" ("The Highest Apple") - Runrig
"All Together Now" - The Farm
If I'm in the right (or wrong) mood, I can choke right up just having them running through my head...

Kraftwerk are doing a world tour this year. I'll be seeing them on the UK leg, but I just checked their website (www.kraftwerk.com) for North American dates. There are FOUR (count 'em), as follows:
23 April 04 - TORONTO - RICOH COLISEUM
24 April 04 - MONTREAL - METROPOLIS
26 April 04 - SEATTLE - PARAMOUNT
28 April 04 - SAN FRANCISCO - WARFIELD
I think these dates have been added, as the last time I checked the site the tour finished in Dresden on 08 April. Don't know if any of them'll be particularly handy for you, or even if there'll still be tickets - I know I was lucky to get unreserved balcony seating for myself and a friend at the gig I'll be going to. Ralf and Florian ain't getting any younger (both nearing 60), and given the lack of frequency with which they tour/record these days, it could well be yer last chance...
Oh, and while I'm here, I'd just like to 'big up' Liz Fraser, ex Cocteau Twins (the greatest female vocalist EVER), Devo (one of America's better exports [:p]), and The Stranglers... I'm in the unfortunate position where most of the bands I'd pay BIG money to see (as Minimus said) are either 'long gone' or limping along without their original lineup - as a friend of mine once put it, 'a tribute band that happens to have some of the original members' [:(]
